Shalfleet Parish Rate -1896

This is an extract from the Shalfleet Church Monthly June 1896

Voluntary Rate

At the Vestry Meeting held on November 14th 1895, it was resolved that a 2d. rate be made for the school. And Mr Kingswell kindly consented once more to collect as much as possible. As the School year is now ended and the Balance Sheet for the year made up, once more the list of those who paid and those who did not pay finds its place in the pages of the Parish Magazine. On comparing the list with that published last year it will be seen that though a 6d. rate was made, this was paid in better proportion than the 2d. rate this year. We regret that we did not make a 3d. rate this year, for then, perhaps, we should have been able to present to H.M. Inspector a clear Balance Sheet, whereas we now have to show a deficit of £11 6s 10d.
